A little history
East Point began in 1870 as a railroad terminus and got its name from its spot at the eastern end of the Atlanta & West Point Railroad; West Point, Georgia, was the western end. The city received its first charter in 1887. It grew as a working-class railroad and industrial town alongside neighboring College Park and Hapeville, which together became known as the Tri-Cities. Sumner Park’s Dick Lane Velodrome, built in 1974, served as a training site for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
What it’s like to live in East Point
Living in East Point means quick access to almost everything. East Point MARTA station on the Red and Gold Lines runs to Downtown, Midtown and the airport, and I-85, I-285 and Langford Parkway are close. The historic downtown and civic block anchor the city, Camp Creek Marketplace has shopping and dining, and the Dick Lane Velodrome hosts cycling events. College Park and Hapeville, with their own downtowns and restaurants, are next door.
Homes and prices
You’ll find early 1900s bungalows near downtown, mid-century brick ranches, townhomes and some new infill. East Point fits first-time buyers who want to stay close to Atlanta on a budget, airport and travel-industry workers, MARTA commuters and investors. It’s also a good fit for buyers who don’t mind a little renovation in exchange for a lower price.
My step-by-step guide to buying in East Point
Step 1: Get pre-approved
Talk with a lender and ask about down payment assistance programs that may apply.
Step 2: Pick your area
Compare streets near downtown and MARTA with quieter residential neighborhoods.
Step 3: Confirm city limits
An East Point address isn’t always inside the City of East Point, which affects taxes and services.
Step 4: Check airport noise
Visit at different times of day, since some streets sit under flight paths.
Step 5: Tour and compare
See several homes so you know what your budget buys. I’ll pull recent sales street by street.
Step 6: Make a smart offer
With a median of 31 days on market, you may have room to negotiate on price or repairs.
Step 7: Inspect and close
Get a full inspection and a sewer scope on older homes, then get ready for closing.
