A little history

Capitol View was established in 1912 on what had been farmland owned by a handful of families, and it took its name from its view of the Georgia State Capitol. Between 1910 and 1914 the community grew quickly, and the early streetcar system laid its streets out in a grid. Earlier Queen Anne houses built by the Deckner family, for whom Deckner Avenue is named, predate much of the neighborhood, and Craftsman bungalows filled in most of the lots in the first half of the 20th century.

What it’s like to live in Capitol View

Capitol View has a strong sense of place: neighbors know each other, and community events bring people together. The BeltLine’s Westside Trail along the north side connects to Adair Park, West End and Lee + White’s breweries, while Perkerson Park to the south has trails, sports fields and open space. The MET Atlanta arts complex is on Metropolitan Parkway, and Downtown, the airport and the interstates are all close.

Homes and prices

Most homes are Craftsman bungalows from the first half of the 1900s, along with Queen Anne houses, cottages, Cape Cods and colonials, many with wide front porches, back decks and spacious yards. Over the past 12 months, 23 homes sold in Capitol View at a median of $399,000, about 12% higher than the year before. Homes went under contract in a median of 18 days and sold for about 98% of list price, and 14 homes were for sale in October.

Who Capitol View fits

Capitol View tends to fit buyers who want a historic bungalow with BeltLine access at a price below many intown neighborhoods, close to Downtown and the airport. If you want a fully finished streetscape or a walkable restaurant strip at your door, you may also want to look at West End or Grant Park.
