Today I’ll talk about homestead exemptions and what they mean for you as a homeowner.
Homestead exemptions give you a discount on your property taxes. In Georgia, that discount applies to the property that you have lived in at least six months out of the year. Homestead exemption applications are based on when you purchased the home and who lived in the home as of January 1. For example, if you recently purchased a home at the end of 2021, you’d apply for homestead exemption in 2022.
Homestead exemption application forms can easily be found on your county’s website. Make sure you have your driver’s license with the current address, car title and tag with your current address, and the settlement statement that you received at closing as proof of purchase.
Other exemptions are available on a case-by-case basis and can be found on the same site. It’s worth your time to see if you qualify for any other exemptions. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me. I look forward to hearing from you.
